About this session
Access to public and private climate finance for SIDS and LDCs is constrained by the same underlying problem: the financial system is designed around large, standardised, and intermediary-led transactions, thereby excluding smaller economies and local institutions and project sponsors. For the most climate-vulnerable countries, enabling access to private finance lies not just in mobilising an increased volume, but requires identifying who has an existing route to private capital, who is locked out, and why.
Co-hosted by E3G and IIED with input from donor and partner countries, the public and private sectors, and multilateral and national development banks, the purpose of the Expanding Access to Private Finance for SIDS and LDCs session at Pre-COP is to platform pathways to private finance as a key theme of the access priority and to engage the stakeholders in these processes. The session aims to identify practical solutions across three areas: hands-on transaction support, regional pooling, and the role of national development banks, and pave the way for ongoing access efforts at COP31.
