The Fala of Witness: A Pacific Climate Justice Talanoa

A Pacific intergenerational gathering bringing together young people, church leaders, and community representatives from across Oceania around a large, traditional woven mat, symbolising the region’s interconnected cultures, shared resilience, and the collective weaving together of diverse voices through the climate crisis. Participants would share their own experiences and perspectives, reports and narratives, physically pinning written messages onto the mat as a sign of their voices being bound together and carried from Oceania into Pre-COP and COP31. At the conclusion, the mat would be ceremonially rolled up with all the testimonies kept safely inside, creating a powerful, symbolic scroll of Oceania's demands. The stories, reflections, and calls to action emerging from the gathering would be amplified through media and social media, and the rolled mat would be formally presented to ministers and negotiators, particularly the Australian Government in its role as COP31 President, charging them to carry the heavy weight of these voices into the negotiations.
